Inset sink (drop-in)

The sink drops into a hole cut in the worktop and sits on a lip around the edge. Easy to fit. Seal around the edge with silicone to stop leaks. Most common type.

Undermount sink

The sink's mounted under the worktop so there's no lip. Looks neater but harder to fit. Needs supporting from underneath or it'll sag. Only works with solid worktops (granite, quartz, solid wood).

Belfast or butler sink

Big deep ceramic sink that sits on a cabinet or brackets. Heavy (30-40kg), so needs solid support. Popular in country kitchens and older Chatham properties.
