HomeGeneral PlumbingShower Installation

Installing a shower involves plumbing the supply (hot and cold for mixer showers, cold only for electric), running the waste, and mounting the unit. Electric showers need an electrician as well. Mixer showers need decent pressure to work properly.

We'll install your shower, run the pipework, connect the waste, and test it. If you've got low pressure, we'll advise on a pump. If it's an electric shower, we'll do the plumbing and you'll need an electrician for the wiring.

There's no call-out fee when you book with us. Bring your own shower or we can supply one. We'll quote you before we start, and our 12-month guarantee is included with our membership plan.

Types of Showers

Electric shower

Heats cold water instantly using an electric element. Only needs a cold water supply. Works on low pressure (good for older Chatham properties with loft tanks). Needs an electrician to wire it (we'll do the plumbing only).

Mixer shower (thermostatic or manual)

Mixes hot and cold water to the temperature you want. Needs hot and cold supplies with balanced pressure. Thermostatic mixers keep the temperature steady. Manual mixers are cheaper but the temperature fluctuates if someone uses water elsewhere.

Power shower (with pump)

A mixer shower with a built-in pump to boost pressure. Only works with a hot water cylinder (not combi boilers). Good for older properties with low pressure. Costs more but gives a powerful shower.

Digital shower

Controlled by a digital processor. You set the temperature and flow precisely. Expensive but reliable. Needs hot and cold supplies and sometimes needs a pump if pressure's low.

How We Install Showers

1

Check the water pressure

We'll test the hot and cold pressure to see if a mixer shower will work properly. If pressure's low (below 1 bar), we'll recommend an electric shower or a power shower with a pump.

2

Run the supply pipes

We'll run hot and cold pipes (for mixer showers) or just cold (for electric showers) from the nearest supply points to the shower location. We'll fit isolation valves so the shower can be isolated without draining the system.

3

Fit the shower unit

We'll mount the shower unit on the wall, connect the supply pipes, and fit the shower head and hose. For electric showers, we'll do the plumbing and you'll need an electrician to wire it.

4

Connect the waste

We'll run the waste pipe from the shower tray to the nearest waste stack or drain. The waste needs a trap and a fall (slope) to drain properly. We'll test it to make sure it doesn't overflow or back up.

5

Test and commission

We'll turn the water on, test the shower at different temperatures and flows, and check for leaks. For mixer showers, we'll make sure the temperature's stable. Once it's all working, job done.

Types of Showers We Install

Electric showers

Heat water instantly, work on any pressure system, cheapest to install. Good for en-suites or homes with poor hot water pressure.

Mixer showers

Blend hot and cold water. Require decent pressure on both supplies or a pump. Better flow than electric but need hot water available.

Power showers

Built-in pump for strong flow even on low pressure systems. Ideal for gravity-fed tanks in older Chatham homes.

Digital showers

Precise temperature control, can run multiple outlets. More expensive but worth it for high-end bathrooms.

Got questions? Here's the quick answers.

How much does shower installation cost in Chatham?
Electric shower fitting (plumbing only) costs £150 to £250. Mixer shower fitting costs £180 to £300. Power shower with pump costs £350 to £500. If we supply the shower as well, add £150 to £300 for the unit.
How long does shower installation take?
A straightforward shower installation takes half a day. Longer if we're running pipes a long way or fitting a pump. If it's a full bathroom refit, it's part of a bigger job.
Can I buy the shower myself?
Yes. Buy it from wherever you like. Just make sure it's the right type for your water pressure and system (electric, mixer, power). We'll fit whatever you've bought.
Do you wire electric showers?
No. We'll do the plumbing (run the cold supply, fit the unit, connect the waste), but you'll need an electrician to wire it. Electric showers need a dedicated circuit from the consumer unit.
Will a mixer shower work in my house?
Depends on your pressure. Mixer showers need at least 1 bar hot and cold pressure. If you've got a combi boiler, you'll have mains pressure and a mixer will work fine. If you've got a loft tank, pressure might be low and you'll need a pump or an electric shower.
What's better, electric or mixer?
Electric showers work on low pressure and are cheaper to install (no hot pipe needed), but the flow's weaker. Mixer showers give better flow and temperature control, but need decent pressure. If you've got low pressure, go electric or fit a pump.
Can you install a shower over the bath?
Yes. We'll fit the shower on the wall, run the pipes, and connect the waste to the bath waste. You'll need a shower screen or curtain to stop water splashing everywhere.
Do you install shower trays and enclosures?
We'll install the shower tray and connect the waste, but we won't fit the enclosure or tiles. That's a bathroom fitter's or tiler's job. We do the plumbing, they do the finishing.
