HomeGeneral PlumbingTap Installation

Installing a new tap looks simple, but it needs doing properly to avoid leaks. You need to connect hot and cold supplies, seal the base, and tighten the backnut without cracking the sink. Get it wrong and you'll flood the place.

We'll fit your new tap (kitchen, bathroom, basin, whatever), connect the supplies, test for leaks, and tidy up. Takes about an hour for a straightforward tap. If your pipes are awkward or the tap needs adaptors, it might take longer.

There's no call-out fee when you book with us. Bring your own tap or we can supply one. We'll quote you before we start, and our 12-month guarantee is included with our membership plan.

What to Check Before Buying a Tap

Number of tap holes

Count the holes in your sink or basin. One hole = monobloc mixer. Two holes = pillar taps or two-hole mixer. Three holes = bridge mixer. Buy the wrong type and it won't fit.

Tap tail length

The threaded tails need to be long enough to reach through the sink and stick out far enough to attach fittings. Standard tails are fine for most sinks. Thick worktops or deep basins might need extended tails.

Water pressure requirements

Some taps need minimum pressure. If you've got low pressure (loft tank, no pump), check the tap's minimum pressure rating before you buy.

How We Fit Taps

1

Turn off the water

We'll turn off hot and cold supplies using isolation valves or the main stop cock.

2

Remove the old tap

We'll disconnect the supplies, undo the backnut, and lift the old tap out. We'll clean the sink around the tap hole.

3

Fit the new tap

We'll feed the tails through, fit the gasket, and tighten the backnut. We'll make sure it's aligned straight and not over-tightened.

4

Connect the supplies and test

We'll connect hot and cold feeds using flexible hoses or copper pipe. We'll turn the water on and check for leaks.

Tap Installation in Chatham Homes

Victorian tap holes

Older sinks often have separate hot and cold taps. We can fit a monoblock mixer tap using a blanking plate to cover one hole.

Worktop thickness

Modern thick stone worktops need longer tap tails. We check before fitting and supply extended connectors if needed.

Flexible vs rigid pipes

Flexible hoses are easier to fit and handle movement better. Rigid copper looks neater but less forgiving if alignment isn't perfect.

Water pressure for tap choice

Low pressure needs taps rated for it. High pressure systems can use any tap but may benefit from flow restrictors to reduce splashing.
