Plumbing in a washing machine sounds simple, but you need a cold water supply with isolation valve, a waste connection that doesn't siphon or leak, and everything secured properly so it doesn't flood when you're out.

We'll install your washing machine, connect the supply and waste, test it through a cycle, and check for leaks. If you're moving a machine to a new location, we'll run new pipes and waste connections.

There's no call-out fee when you book with us. We'll quote you before we start, and our 12-month guarantee is included with our membership plan.

What You Need to Plumb a Washing Machine

Cold water supply with isolation valve

Washing machines need a dedicated cold water supply with a valve you can turn off (so you can disconnect the machine without draining the whole house). If there isn't one, we'll fit a self-tapping valve or tee off the nearest cold pipe.

Waste connection

The waste hose needs to connect to a standpipe (vertical pipe with a trap) or directly into a waste pipe with a spigot fitting. It needs to be above the trap to stop siphoning (where the machine drains then sucks dirty water back in).

Power socket

Washing machines need a standard 13A power socket. If there isn't one near where the machine's going, you'll need an electrician to fit one. We're plumbers, not electricians.

Space and access

The machine needs to fit in the space with enough room to connect the hoses and get the door open. Measure before you buy. Standard washing machines are about 600mm wide, 850mm high, and 600mm deep.

How We Install Washing Machines

1

Check the supply and waste

We'll check if there's a cold water supply nearby. If not, we'll run a new pipe from the nearest cold pipe and fit an isolation valve. We'll check if there's a waste connection (standpipe or spigot). If not, we'll fit one.

2

Connect the supply hose

We'll screw the washing machine's supply hose onto the cold water valve. We'll check the rubber washer's in place and tighten it hand-tight (don't use grips, you'll crack the plastic).

3

Connect the waste hose

We'll push the waste hose into the standpipe or connect it to the waste spigot. The hose needs to be above the trap (at least 600mm high) to stop siphoning. We'll secure it with a clip so it doesn't pop out when the machine drains.

4

Test and check for leaks

We'll turn the water on, run the machine through a quick cycle, and check for leaks at the supply connection and the waste connection. If it's all sound, job done.

Common Installation Issues

No isolating valve

Older homes often have washing machines plumbed directly into pipes. We fit isolation valves so you can turn off water without draining the system.

Shared waste with sink

Not ideal but common in small kitchens. The standpipe must be higher than the sink trap to prevent backflow.

Waste pipe too long

Washing machine pumps can only push water so far. If your waste run is over 3 metres, drainage will be slow or fail.

No anti-siphon gap

The standpipe must be higher than the water level in the machine to prevent dirty water being sucked back in.

Got questions? Here's the quick answers.

How much does washing machine plumbing cost in Chatham?
If there's already a cold supply and waste connection, it's £80 to £120 to connect the machine. If we need to run new pipes, it's £120 to £180. Relocating a machine to a different room costs £150 to £250.
How long does washing machine installation take?
About 30 minutes to an hour if the supply and waste are already there. Longer if we need to run new pipes or fit a new waste connection.
Do you move the old machine out?
We'll disconnect it and move it out of the way, but we won't take it away. You'll need to arrange disposal yourself or take it to the tip.
Can you install an integrated washing machine?
We'll do the plumbing (connect supply and waste), but we won't fit the door or the housing. That's a kitchen fitter's job, not ours.
Why does my washing machine waste smell?
The waste hose is pushed too far into the standpipe or spigot and it's gone past the trap. Dirty water and smells come back up. We'll pull it out to the right height (just past the trap inlet, not all the way down).
Can you move the washing machine to a different room?
Yes. We'll run new cold supply and waste pipes to the new location and connect the machine. Costs £150 to £250 depending on how far we're running pipes.
Do I need hot and cold supply?
Modern washing machines only need cold. They heat the water internally. Old machines (pre-2000) sometimes needed hot and cold feeds, but you can connect the hot inlet to the cold supply and the machine will still work fine.
Will you install the machine if I bought it online?
Yes. We'll plumb it in and test it. Just make sure it's the right size for the space before it's delivered. We can't work miracles if it doesn't fit.
